Are they interchangeable?

Yes — interchangeable

Yes, in most cases. Rechargeable NiMH batteries work in most TV remotes, but they run at 1.2V instead of 1.5V. Most remotes function fine at this lower voltage. However, remotes are low-drain devices that go months on a set of disposables, which makes rechargeables somewhat pointless — you would be recharging batteries that still have plenty of life left. The economics do not really favour rechargeables for remotes.

The verdict

You can use rechargeables in a remote, but there is little practical benefit. Remotes are one of the few devices where disposable alkaline actually makes more sense because of the very low power draw and long intervals between replacement.
