Why is my smoke alarm beeping?
One beep every 30–60 seconds = low battery.
That's almost always the answer.
Replace the battery with a fresh 9V battery and the beeping will stop. This is more common at night because cooler temperatures drain batteries faster.

What do the different beeps mean?
One beep every 30–60 seconds
Low battery. Replace the 9V battery. This is the most common cause — especially at night when temperatures drop and battery performance decreases.
Continuous loud alarm
The alarm has detected smoke. Leave the building immediately and call emergency services from outside — 999 in the UK, 911 in the US. If you are certain there is no fire (steam, cooking fumes or dust), open windows, press the silence button and ventilate the room.
Multiple beeps in a pattern
Could indicate a fault or that the alarm has reached end of life (10 years). Check the manufacturing date on the back of the alarm. If it's over 10 years old, replace the whole unit.
How to silence it right now (2am fix)
If it's the middle of the night and you need it to stop immediately:
Press and hold the test button for 10–20 seconds. On most alarms this silences it for a few hours.
If that doesn't work — carefully remove the alarm from the ceiling mount (usually twist anticlockwise) and remove the battery. This will stop the beeping immediately.
Important: Replace the battery first thing in the morning. Do not leave your home without a working smoke alarm.
How to replace a smoke alarm battery
Twist the alarm anticlockwise to detach it from the ceiling mount. Some models have a release tab instead.
Open the battery compartment — usually a sliding or hinged door on the back or side of the unit.
Remove the old battery and insert a fresh 9V battery, making sure the positive (+) and negative (−) terminals are correctly aligned.
Close the battery compartment and reattach the alarm to the ceiling mount.
Press the test button to confirm the alarm is working. You should hear a short beep or alarm sound.
Which battery does a smoke alarm take?
Most smoke alarms use a 9V battery. This includes the vast majority of battery-powered and mains-powered smoke alarms with battery backup.
Some newer or slim-profile alarms use AA batteries — check the battery compartment or the back of your alarm if you are unsure.
Brands like Kidde, FireAngel, Aico, Nest Protect and most own-brand alarms all use a standard 9V battery in their battery-powered models.

Why does it always beep at night?
This is one of the most common complaints about smoke alarms — and there's a simple scientific reason for it.
Batteries lose charge faster at lower temperatures. At night, room temperatures drop, which reduces the battery's ability to power the alarm. This pushes a battery that was borderline during the day into the low-battery zone overnight — triggering the chirp.
The fix is the same: replace the battery. Using a lithium 9V battery eliminates this problem because lithium chemistry is far less affected by temperature changes than standard alkaline batteries.
When to replace the whole alarm
Smoke alarms do not last forever. Most should be replaced every 10 years regardless of whether they appear to be working.
Check the manufacturing date printed on the back of your alarm. If it is approaching or past 10 years old, replace the entire unit — not just the battery. The sensors inside degrade over time and an old alarm may not protect you even with a fresh battery.
