Why is my TV remote not working?
Most common cause = dead batteries.
Replace them and it should work immediately.
Most TV remotes use 2 AAA batteries. Some older or larger remotes use 2 AA batteries. If your remote has stopped working or is unresponsive, replacing both batteries with fresh ones takes 30 seconds and fixes it most of the time.
๐ฑ Quick test โ is the remote sending a signal?
Point your remote at your phone camera and press any button. If you can see a white or purple light flashing on the screen, the remote is working and the problem may be with the TV or its sensor. If you see no light at all, the batteries are dead or the remote is faulty.

Common causes โ and how to fix each one
Dead or weak batteries โ most common
Replace both batteries at the same time with fresh ones. Even if one battery still has some charge, mismatched batteries cause unreliable performance. Always replace as a pair.
IR sensor blocked or TV on wrong input
The TV's infrared sensor (usually a small dark window at the front bottom of the TV) may be blocked by a soundbar, ornament or direct sunlight. Make sure nothing is in front of it. Also check your TV isn't on the wrong input โ press the Source or Input button on the TV itself.
Dirty battery contacts or sticky buttons
Remove the batteries and clean the metal contacts in the battery compartment with a dry cloth or pencil eraser. Sticky or unresponsive buttons can often be fixed by pressing them firmly multiple times to dislodge debris under the rubber.
Remote needs resetting
Remove the batteries, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain any residual charge, then reinsert fresh batteries. This resets the remote's internal microchip and often resolves mystery faults.
Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection lost
Modern smart TV remotes (Samsung, LG, Amazon Fire, Apple TV) use Bluetooth rather than infrared. If the remote has lost its pairing, hold the back button and home button together for 5 seconds to re-pair, or check your TV's remote pairing settings.
Which batteries does my TV remote use?
Most TV remotes use 2 AAA batteries. Some older or larger remotes use 2 AA batteries. Check the battery compartment on the back of your remote.
My smart TV remote uses no batteries โ what now?
Several modern TV remotes have moved away from replaceable batteries entirely:
Samsung Solar Remote โ charges from indoor or outdoor light. If it stops working, place it in direct light for a few hours or charge via USB-C.
Apple TV Siri Remote (2nd gen+) โ built-in rechargeable battery. Charge via Lightning or USB-C. Battery life is typically several months per charge.
LG Magic Remote (some models) โ some charge via USB, others use AA batteries. Check the back of your remote.
